About Gina Ko, PhD.
I am a Registered Psychologist in Alberta (#4939) with over 10 years of experience in counselling psychology. I believe in collaborative and compassionate approaches to therapeutic experiences. I believe clients come with strengths, agency, and resources. I often co-create understanding, ideas, and suggestions with clients so sessions are helpful and empowering.
I was born in Vietnam and came to Canada with my family as a refugee at two years old. I identify as a Chinese Canadian with Vietnamese roots. I lived in Calgary most of my life and attended public schools. I have a teaching background and have worked with many youth and families in educational and counselling settings.
In my first two years of teaching (2000-2002), I taught for Little Red River Cree Nation in Northern Alberta and cultivated strong and meaningful relationships with my students, their families, and the community. Thereafter, I returned to Calgary and taught for the Calgary Board of Education for an additional five years.
After having two children, I decided to return to school to obtain my master’s degree in Counselling Psychology. This decision was prompted by many students who let me know that I am a good listener, relatable, empathetic, and kind. It was one of the best decisions ever!
Going back to school in my early 30s was nerve-wracking, exciting, and fulfilling. I met incredible professors and peers who were encouraging and supportive. I continued forth to obtain a Doctorate in Educational Leadership (2019) and became a Registered Psychologist (2018).
Outside of my practice, I have taught in several post-secondary institutions in Undergraduate Programs in Education and Master of Counselling Programs. I learn a great deal from adult learners and consider myself a lifelong learner.
In my spare time, I spend time with my children (14 and 16 years old) and my spouse who is a high school physical education teacher. We support their academic and extracurricular activities, such as sports and music; we have meaningful conversations as a family. I find relationships with family, colleagues, friends, and peers to be growth inspiring. I love music and am learning to play the violin, guitar, and piano. I enjoy working out, playing badminton and volleyball, golfing, reading, writing, colouring, and laughing. These self-care activities are crucial in cultivating self-acceptance and self-love.
I speak Cantonese and can offer a language bridge.
I believe counselling provides new and renewed insight. I work from a holistic approach using the biopsychosocial framework to consider biology, psychology, and social factors that impact health and well-being. I am passionate about working with clients to explore challenges, strengths, and resources in order to support them to thrive. I have experience in the single-session model of therapy, brief therapy, and longer-term therapy. I draw from Solution Focused Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Behaviourial Therapy, Systemic Therapies and work from a culturally responsive and socially just stance.Find renewed insight from a holistic approach. We work together to co-create a thriving life.
